The Internet might not be as safe a place as we want it to be. Not only hackers or cybercriminals are trying to steal personal information, but government, Internet Service Providers (ISP), advertising companies, and a lot of third party companies track, log, and collect information about us to use it for their own purposes. Everyone who doesn't want to be an object of online surveillance should use VPN, or Virtual Private Network, for anonymity, security, and privacy.
VPN encrypts all Internet traffic and passes it over a secured tunnel to the VPN server, which sends the requests further to the website you need. The server's response goes the same way, just in the opposite direction.. In this case, the ISP can only detect that the user is online, the time of connection, and the amount of traffic, but it’s hard for the ISP to see a more detailed picture of their online activity.
It’s absolutely legal to use a VPN in the Netherlands for lawful online actions. But VPNs’ legal status may differ in other countries. That's why we recommend checking it before using a VPN outside of the Netherlands.
Knowing the IP address, it's easy to find out your approximate geographical location, for example, country, city, or postal code. As you can see it’s not as sensitive information as your name or phone number, but it is still important to hide your Netherland IP address nonetheless. The IP address is like your unique online signature – knowing it, it is easy to track all your web activity, analyze your browsing and searching history. When you turn on a VPN and hide your IP behind another one, it becomes hard to do it.
When you connect to the web, your device is automatically marked with an IP address, which can give away the country you are located in. Some Netherland websites, services, or applications restrict access to users with IP addresses from a different country, not the Netherlands. VPN helps bypass this limitation and get access to your favorite content from abroad by hiding your actual IP address and assigning your device the required Netherlands IP address.
If you don’t use VPN in the Netherlands your ISP knows a lot about your online activity. ISP has information about sites you visit, your location, your device, downloaded files, searching history. If you want to prevent ISP from spying and stay anonymous, the best way is to use a Netherlands VPN.
Free VPN services are not new and it’s easy to find a lot of VPN solutions that don’t require any payment. We prepared some non-obvious features of a free VPN you might not know:
Users have a limited quantity of servers they can choose for connection, for example, only two or three. Also, free VPN services often assign a VPN server to the user by itself.
Free VPNs may noticeably slow down connection speed - an important factor for comfortable watching of live stream videos or playing online games.
Free VPN service providers might log, store and sell your data to cover costs due to the lack of monthly subscriptions. Using a free VPN might not offer the safety, security, and anonymity you look for.
Even if you don't use VPN at home or at work, it does not mean that you don’t need it. Worldwide there are places where the use of a VPN is essential for security and privacy. Mostly those are free public Wi-Fi spots. We all like them but often don’t recognize just how vulnerable they can be. The best practice to protect your online activity is to turn on a VPN.
