AdGuard VPN now supports routers
You’ve asked us a lot about this feature, so it probably needs no introduction. Meet AdGuard VPN for routers! If you’re ready to get started, read the instructions. If you’re not familiar with this feature yet, we’ve found some use cases and “buts” to help you make up your mind.
This feature requires an AdGuard VPN subscription and IKEv2/IPsec support. More protocols will be added in the future.
How this can be useful
A router with a VPN is a powerful privacy protection tool. Here are some reasons why you might need it:
- Enhance security and protect your data on devices where you cannot install AdGuard VPN apps — smart TVs (currently, AdGuard VPN is only available on Android TV) and game consoles. Watch movies and play games from anywhere in the world
- Cover dozens of devices with one license — set up AdGuard VPN on your office router
Note that all devices connected to the router will have the same IP address and will be displayed as one device in your account.
Which routers are supported
To check if your router supports IKEv2/IPsec, take a look at the VPN Client section of your router’s settings. Look for the option IKEv2/IPsec or IKE – not L2TP/IPsec. If you find it, you’re good to go.
Make sure you’re in the VPN Client section, not VPN Server. If you spot an option to enter a pre-shared key, you are probably in the wrong place.
How to set it up
- In your AdGuard account, go to Products and select AdGuard VPN.
- Under Devices, click Add router.
- Choose a name for your router, select a VPN protocol and server location, and click Add. Wait for your credentials to be generated.
- In your router’s admin panel, navigate to Settings, enable VPN Client, and click Add VPN Server.
- Select IPsec-client (it may be called IKE; not L2TP/IPsec).
- Enter the credentials generated in step 3.
- Connect your devices to the router.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to update your router settings if you want to change the VPN server location.
